In the heart of DUMBO, where Washington Street meets Water Street, a unique soundscape unfolds. The Manhattan Bridge, an iconic steel giant, hums a constant melody, while the D train rumbles beneath, creating an impromptu rhythm section. It's here that we find the inspiration for our field recording project, a collaboration between a sound artist, a jazz drummer, and the urban landscape of Brooklyn. Our sound artist, equipped with a keen ear and a array of microphones, set out to capture the essence of this sonic tapestry. With each pass of the D train, the bridge's hum would swell, creating an otherworldly harmony. The sound artist's task was to weave these disparate threads into a cohesive composition, one that would reflect the dynamic interplay between the bridge, the train, and the city itself. As we delved deeper into the project, a jazz drummer joined our ranks, bringing with him a deep understanding of rhythm and improvisation. Together, we experimented with sampling the bridge's hum, incorporating it into the drummer's beats, and creating an entirely new sound. The result was a mesmerizing fusion of industrial and organic, as the Manhattan Bridge's voice merged with the drummer's percussive flair. Through this project, we've come to realize that the Manhattan Bridge is more than just a steel structure – it's a living, breathing entity that pulsates with the rhythm of the city.
